THEY TOLD ME TO BE ASHAMED OF GROWING UP IN FOSTER CARE;
I CHOOSE TO BE PROUD THAT I SURVIVED THEIR SYSTEM
Jimmy Groen is a self- taught multimedia artist and author, collaborating with Tim and Alex. Their collective work is an intellectual journey into identity and the human condition of the marginalized: a reflection of fragmented worlds.
Having spent almost his entire childhood in Dutch the youth care system, being denied access to mental health care for life and living on the fringes of society, Jimmy turned to creativity to process and communicate his experiences.
His life and visual art serve as a testimony to state-driven out-casting methodologies and gaslighting, designed to marginalize, isolate, and erase those who do not fit the norm. He also challenges the selective nature of modern diversity movements, which often intentionally exclude the most vulnerable to maintain their own respectability. This opposing selectivity is visible in his work, which shows Jimmy is a fierce advocate for radical inclusion. Jimmy’s work reclaims a space for those the world has tried to delete. He was a member of the Fantastikè collective in Maastricht and spent several years refining his craft at the art academies of Tongeren and Verviers (B). His work, both his visual art as his books authored under pseudonym Jasper Heijting is focusing on themes of queer and fragmented identity and a life outside mainstream society.
