Bio Jimmy Groen English
Jimmy's life and work have been largely influenced by his extreme childhood experiences in the Dutch youth care system. As part of the so-called policy of 'complete identity destruction of foster children', Jimmy was unfortunately not allowed to experience his own gender, and all contacts with the outside world were impossible (punishable). In this almost entirely closed, particularly strict religious environment, all creativity was punishable, so it became a challenge for Jimmy to dare to express himself later in life.
In 1992, Jimmy Groen began drawing and painting in oil and pastel. The many portraits, group portraits, and figurative representations, about 450 in total, were almost all destroyed in 2002. After this, he focused on nature art, creating authentic prehistoric tools, glass mosaics, weaving, and making 3D objects and 4D projections. To better understand the effects of light and shadow, he experimented with laser light and completed a three-year online course in theoretical physics (quantum mechanics) through Stanford University in the US. Meanwhile, he became increasingly interested in the Arabic language and culture, creating various works, such as representations of Dubai to shepherds in the mountains.
Jimmy's work is usually layered: on the one hand, it is, as he himself almost metaphorically indicates with the natural scientific world, 'made without background,' on the other hand, he wants to tell hidden stories with his work. His favorite materials have long been oil paint and pastel, only later did he begin to draw more of nature and landscapes, with watercolor being a favorite. His styles now range from almost realistic to outsider art.
Between 2020 and 2023, Jimmy was a member of the joint studio Fantastike in Maastricht, where he first showed his work to the outside world. In addition to making art, Jimmy wrote two autobiographical books under a pseudonym, which are available in the libraries of the Netherlands and Flanders. He became the permanent illustrator of his good friend, the poet and word artist Lennart Willems.
From 2025, we see a change in both his subjects and choice of material and technique: Jimmy works more with multimedia and seeks a connection between diverse materials and techniques. In that same year, Jimmy decides to withdraw more to give more shape to his life after foster care - in sports, games, as a minimalist, and in creativity. The latter is mainly reflected in the works of Tim, Alex, and Jimmy11, with whom he continues to collaborate.
