Challenges

1. Motherless nights

In Dutch foster care, it was punishable to love your own mother, to love her as a child. Love was violently punished. Missing your own mother was regarded a  serious crime,  therefore something you had to hide as a child. In the lonely nights, the feeling lived on,  that could go nowhere. Only the tiniest, mysterious creatures, the dust under the bed, and the watching moon understood what you felt, as if they, like you, were trying to exist in the same melancholic loneliness without anyone confirming your existence.

Motherless night - video

Motherless night shows a lonely night, microscopic creatures come to life and

are  magnified as in  a parallel world,

sublimating the loss of the mother figure.

2. Twilight zone

Is it a normal memory and is it real? Did something really happen? Sometimes memories merge with thoughts, they are not processed, but  still they are formed into images. This process is copied to visual material: handmade images are processed with microscopic images into a new image, in which you can ask yourself: is this a normal image or not? Is it real?

3 DREAMS the past, the present

From the past, the child looks and has no idea who they will become. In a dream, the child of then and the adult come together, in images that cannot reach each other, but also cannot exclude each other. The person is always part of a flashback, or a look into the future - which self is real, the child or the adult?

4. I AM TWO BOYS ( but never which one is me)

Who am I? Who would I like to be? Is one self enough? A challenge to self-exploration. Are you the one who speaks or remains silent?

5. Doll's kiss

Dolls live, at least, if you have to believe them yourself. And who determines what reality is?  Tim and Alex form a valid part of an identity. Can they love each other? Poppenkus is a photographic report in 22 seconds, which ultimately shows the love between two pieces of identity.

7 STIGMATIZED

What is it like to live when you are stigmatized, excluded? If violence against you is justified, cheered on, approved*? If a government fully cooperates with this? The stigmatized shows what it is like to be 'marked',  as a warning  in society for being 'different' based on a different gender, different sexuality, or different  experience in which the real  identity itself wants to exist. De-identification means that the stigma can be avoided, but means a 'double existence', visible in the visible portrait with stigma sign (right) and next to it (left)  the shadow of the true self that is not allowed to come out, to exist in the outside world,  out of fear of the consequences in society.

* In 1986 Dutch police officiers told me that foster children were the garbage of society that deserved the gas chamber, because they were the trash that they had to clean.
