State control
Between 2019 and 2025, a series on state control was created based on a true hidden history, concealed by government institutions until today: police brutality and sexual violence, taking place behind the closed doors of police stations in the Netherlands. This country does not meet the standards of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) when it comes to human‑rights compliance, independent investigations, recognition of victims, or adequate care in cases involving (extreme) police violence.
In recent decades, state control in the Netherlands has increasingly become a tool for suppressing voiceless minorities — from children in youth care to people whose lifestyles, identities, or emotional experiences fall outside the norm. The images speak where words fail.
