The forbidden archive

State-Sanctioned Silence: The Forbidden Archive (1986) images  from 2019-2024

This gallery contains the only remaining evidence of a history the Dutch state has actively erased.  In the eighties,  in a police cell, excluded from the law,  people were  subjected to dehumanizing (sexual) violence and Nazi-inspired rhetoric. Today, the authorities admit they do not doubt  such stories - as the eighties were the most violent period  in the Netherlands post -war- , yet they refuse any form of accountability, claiming the archives they once held have been destroyed.

These images are the screams that were forbidden. They document a reality that official history refuses to record. If the state chooses to forget, this archive will bear witness.
