Biography: Lennart Willems

Lennart Willems (1948) is a Dutch poet and wordsmith whose literary journey began in the 1970s. Since 2000, he has dedicated himself full-time to his craft. His oeuvre frequently explores the fringes of society, giving voice to the marginalized and the invisible. In tandem with his social focus, Willems expresses a profound reverence for the undervalued facets of the natural world, often adopting a critical stance toward the environmental impact of human activity.

His work is deeply informed by a passion for historical cities, monuments, and classical music, as well as a fascination with forgotten poets and cultural heritage. These themes are interwoven with evocative memories and a gallery of cherished figures. Rooted in a commitment to both social justice and environmental preservation, his poetry reflects a worldview that is at once critical and deeply compassionate.

Stylistically, Willems strives for a harmonious, sonorous language. He takes pride in revitalizing ‘forgotten’ vocabulary and consciously avoids the use of anglicisms, opting instead for the richness and precision of the Dutch language.
