Trauma art 1992-1997 Strange Rituals from the Past 431 - 488
My creative journey began somewhere in 1992. Painting toys and model planes with acrylics, I tried a self portrait on paper.
Between 1992 and 1998, I produced approximately 450 - 480 works in oil on wood and pastel on paper. In 2002, the majority of this collection was destroyed. Alongside numerous portraits, the core of this work was inspired by 'unfinished memories' from my early childhood. From February 1993-1995, several hundreds of pieces emerged suddenly and were created in isolation, all triggered by the tragic death of the toddler James Bulger in February 1993, which marked a deep turning point in my life.
The work was further shaped by fragmented memories of the state children's home 'Helper Haven' in Groningen (NL). These depictions of infants and toddlers - often in groups portraits of toddlers and sometimes babies - were initially captured in oil paint and later in pastel on paper. Please note that the images presented here are not high-resolution, as they were photographed in 2001 and digitized in 2016. A small part (ca 30-40 works, mainly portraits) of the original collection (about 480 pieces) is still available.
